
BROOKLYN, N.Y. — Carrot introduced a new AI-powered tool, the Severity Index. The company describes it as the first AI-powered assistive tool for objective visual field severity staging.
Integrated directly into Carrot’s 24-2 visual field report, the Severity Index provides clinicians with a data-backed reference point for assessing visual field loss and supporting the management of diseases such as glaucoma. Built to augment—not replace—clinical judgment, the Severity Index automatically classifies visual field loss into four clinically meaningful stages: Normal, Mild, Moderate and Advanced.
The Severity Index was developed in partnership with Eyelomics, an ophthalmic artificial intelligence company founded by Siamak Yousefi, PhD, and Rehan Ahmed, MD.
Built using machine learning analysis of 50,000 reliable visual fields selected from Carrot’s database of more than five million completed exams, the Severity Index represents a new approach to visual field severity assessment. Using unsupervised machine learning techniques, the model identified four natural severity groupings directly from the data—without human-defined thresholds, expert labeling or predetermined staging criteria. Severity boundaries were then derived mathematically from those groupings, creating an objective framework for visual field severity assessment grounded in real-world clinical data.

Unlike generative AI systems, Severity Index uses a fixed, deterministic machine learning model that produces consistent results from the same clinical data. It is designed as an assistive tool and does not replace diagnosis, treatment planning, referral decisions or clinical judgment.
Transforming Data Into Clinical Insight
For more than a decade, Carrot has helped eye care providers modernize visual diagnostics through its VR-based platform. Today, more than 2,400 eye care organizations use Carrot to perform visual field testing and other diagnostic exams, generating one of the largest visual diagnostic datasets in the industry.
The Severity Index marks the first major example of Carrot transforming its database of more than five million completed exams into a new generation of AI-powered clinical intelligence.

Severity Index is automatically generated as part of Carrot’s 24-2 visual field workflow. No additional testing, training, software or workflow changes are required.
Clinicians continue to perform and review visual fields as they always have, while receiving an additional objective severity reference point directly within the report.
The launch of Severity Index coincides with Carrot’s release of its next-generation reporting experience, which introduces enhanced report design, improved clinical usability, and AI-enhanced visual field reporting capabilities.
