WASHINGTON D.C. — The Pew Research Center released a new study that explored American’s views on artificial intelligence, chatbots and smart devices.

The Pew team surveyed over 5,100 American adults from February 17-23, 2026. All respondents were part of the organization’s American Trends Panel, the Center’s nationally-representative panel of randomly-selected U.S. adults.

The primary goal of the survey was to get a clearer picture of how Americans are using AI today. This included demographics on who is using AI, which chatbots they prefer, what smart devices are in their homes and their overall views on AI and its impact on society.

Some Key Takeaways

Here’s a look at some of the key findings from the survey:

  • About 50% of U.S. adults report using an AI chatbot. Of that number, about 25% report using them daily.
  • Approximately one-third of respondents have a smart speaker in their homes. Fewer reported having smart thermostats or doorbells.
  • Roughly half of adults under 30 believe that AI will negatively impact society, while about 40% of adults over 30 feel the same way.
